Don't be fooled by their small size -- lovebirds
(and parrotlets!) ARE parrots, just like the big amazons and macaws. They
belong to the parrot family, and share many parrot characteristics Many
people think that small birds don't have the qualities of the larger parrots.
Ask a lovebird owner, and you'll find they couldn't be more wrong.
Lovebirds and parrotlets have many of the characteristics attributed
to "parrots" including:
1. Individual personalities. That's right! Each little lovebird
and parrotlet comes with its very own likes and dislikes, attitudes, fears,
and needs. You'll find these little birds have different food, toy,
play-time, and social favorites. The fun part is finding out what personality
YOUR lovebird or parrotlet has!
2. Intelligence.
Smarter than the average bear! Just because they are small doesn't
mean they are dumb. Lovebirds are very smart. Their minds are
active and like working on puzzles and toys that require some kind of thinking.
They can learn to mimic, figure out your routine, let themselves out
of their cages, and manipulate their owners into giving into their desires.
Watch a lovebird, and you will see a parrot that carefully observes
its environment and acts accordingly. Parrotlets are even known to
learn how to talk!
3. Eye catching colors.
There aren't many species of birds out there that can boast of more
color mutations than the lovebird. Lovebirds come in many different
colors -- which can be combined in numerous ways to create even MORE colors.
This makes breeding lovebirds interesting and exciting for even the
most experienced parrot breeder. It also makes picking out a pet lovebird
that much more fun! The number of parrotlet color mutations is also
increasing, giving parrotlet owners more to choose from.
4. Social needs.
Parrots are flock animals, so they naturally need social interaction.
Lovebirds and parrotlets are no different. Owners should be aware
of their pet's needs, and be considerate when deciding when to give their
bird love and attention. Just because they're small doesn't mean they
don't need as much interaction with their owners as larger birds. A
lovebird with a caring owner will be the happiest little bird you'll see.
